Permeable landscaping is a fundamental part of Sustainable urban Drainage Systems (SuDS).

By managing rainwater naturally, permeable landscaping helps to make our towns and cities more resilient to heavy rainfall and environmental challenges.

It enables rainwater to naturally infiltrate into the ground rather than overwhelming traditional drainage, which helps to reduces flood risks.

The key benefits of permeable landscaping includes:

  • Reduction of surface runoff
  • Flood prevention
  • Improvement of water quality through filtration
  • Increased urban biodiversity and improved habitats
  • Replenishment of groundwater
  • Reduced strain on sewer systems
  • Helps to mitigate urban heat

How the System Works

Permeable paving systems are designed to manage rainfall at its source by allowing water to pass through the surface rather than directing it immediately into conventional drainage networks. The surface layer, which may consist of porous asphalt, porous concrete, or permeable paving blocks with aggregate-filled joints, allows rainwater to infiltrate freely.

Beneath the surface, a series of stone bedding and sub-base layers provide structural support while creating void spaces that temporarily store water during heavy rainfall. This underground reservoir helps reduce surface runoff and minimise flood risk.

The stored water is then released gradually. Where ground conditions are suitable, it infiltrates naturally into the underlying soil. In areas with impermeable soils or contamination concerns, the system can incorporate liners and drainage pipes to control the rate of discharge into nearby watercourses or drainage networks. This approach supports Sustainable urban Drainage Systems (SuDS) by reducing pressure on conventional drainage infrastructure and improving stormwater management.
